3. David Akiyoshi; 2015; Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon; Clarksburg Cork – Light, fruity; smells divine! Initial Nose – A little fuller aroma than the cork, expected, and very pleasant! Initial Pallet – Very fruity, light-dry flavor that smoothly spread over the pallet, mixing that flavor with a sense of pure pleasure in each taste zone! Initial Finish – Light front finish with a bold, zesty back finish and a bit of a dryness that stayed with me for a few minutes thereafter. 2nd Glass Nose – Made my nose wrinkle…or, maybe that was the online professor; whichever…David’s wine still smells pretty dang good! 2nd Glass Pallet – By then I was crying “You’re killing me, Smalls!” Yep, could’ve laid down on a pallet and just slept through the rest of the class…except they frigging COUNT slides viewed! Can you believe it? I mean, REALLY? How could they? Thank goodness David has some excellent study material! Without which, I might add, this lesson would have been a LOT worse! 2nd Glass Finish – Couldn’t stop at two…was well into my third when the online professor finally silenced! Glad of it, too! Survived yet another rendition of learn all you can at your own pace…good golly Miss Molly! Served with – Homework; yep, just sucked it down through the droll, boring online lectures wrought with PowerPoint slides. The only legs I was concerned with were the two at the top of my feet connected to the bottom of my a$$; worried about them going to sleep in the chair – had to stand and walk about for a bit; ooh, good, more wine! 😉 Perhaps this wasn’t the best CHOICE for serving; maybe I didn’t do this red adequate justice…but that second and third glass of 14.5% Alc. by Vol. was heaven sent when I got to the online test – didn’t care whether I passed or not; GREAT course! 😊 Summary – This lightly dry red Cab Sauv will DEFINITELY go on my list to reorder! It is a VERY pleasing taste experience that may better be paired with either an Italian red sauce over pasta of your choice, steamed vegetables, and oven-baked dinner roll…or a thick, juicy, home-raised steak with grilled veggies and a tater; whichever you prefer, both will balance well! Rating – Based upon my limited amateur experience, I’m rating at 95%.

Sam-I-Am on Arabella Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
4. Stephen de Wet; 2016; Arabella Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon; Western Cape, So. Africa Cork – Light, refreshing, fruity; anxious to experience Initial Nose – Again, light and refreshing, subtle hints of strong, flavorful grapes Initial Pallet – Moderate initial flavor, fully saturates the pallet with simple sense of pure Cab Sauv! I suspect there’s more to it, but the grape is DEFINITELY there…and, yes, WOW pleasant! Initial Finish – A little tart in the front, less sharp and smoother in the back of the finish (I know, that’s what “she” said!); lips tingle with that same sharpness…not exactly unpleasant! 2nd Glass Nose – Wish I could tie my socks together, dip the toes into this wine, and hang them around my neck…maybe, just MAYBE they wouldn’t smell quite so bad! Yes, the nose of this wine could save the day! 2nd Glass Pallet – Ever notice that when you swish wine around in your mouth you get different flavors across your tongue…and then, THEN on about the 3rd or 4th (or other) glass, it all tries to go numb and you just don’t seem to discern all the joy of the wine you started with; it just goes right along with the poem: “passed the teeth, over the gums, look out tummy, here it comes!” Good enough for this engineer! 😊 2nd Glass Finish – Yep; swilled it down like the wino I am not. I am truly a WINE-YES vice WINO! Perhaps I can become a carnie-sewer at some point. My mother probably thinks my mouth already is (sorry, Mom…rolling over in your grave)! 😉 Served with – Laundry. Yep; not exactly uncommon for single divorcees to do stuff in the “Must do to live” category. Like cooking; I do it (with and without a microwave) on occasion, like when limited funds limit my dining out choices. Anyway, I thought it appropriate that I sat at the PC taste-testing, waiting for underwear to dry…well, naked as wine! 😉 I know, for some of you that’s probably TMI; apologies for the visual that you didn’t have until this moment in my review. Gotcha! WTH! Laundry IS truly better with wine…as are most routines in life! Summary - This lightly semi-dry red Cab Sauv will DEFINITELY go on my list to reorder! I know some of you will pair it with food or something else rather “traditional” – don’t worry, it will go with THAT (whatever you want THAT to be) too! Porch sitting, snuggling, or whatever one might do with oneself (NO, don’t think THAT!), this is a well-balanced, excellent flavor choice. Thanks, Stephen de Wet! Rating – Based upon my limited amateur experience, I’m rating at 95%.

Sam-I-Am on WTD Cuvee no. 2 2016
1. Wayne Donaldson; 2016; WTD Brut Cuvée No. 2; California (Actually from Case #2) ANGEL DAY CELEBRATION – my first half-case complete! Cork – very light hint…doesn’t suggest much of anything Initial Nose – light, fruity, sparkling and zesty! Initial Pallet – slight dryness amidst the sweet, fruity tang Initial Finish – semi-dry, zesty zing that lasted a few seconds, leaving a mouthful of refreshed sweetness with a tingle on the tongue Served with – Browned spiced venison sausage blended into Progresso® (Light) Chicken & Cheese Enchilada soup poured over Zatarain's® Spanish rice, with Keebler® Town House Light and Buttery crackers on the side; YUM! 😊 Oh, yeah, and also in celebration…local cake lady’s homemade coconut cake – even YUMMIER! 😊 2nd Glass Nose – Just as good as the first… 2nd Glass Pallet – Just as good as the first…or just maybe a little better! 2nd Glass Finish – DAMN! Didn’t last long enough…gotta have another! 😊 Served with – more online computer training…by the third (okay, maybe it WAS the fourth) glass the instructors were running together cross-talking about different subjects while holding hands; there was a distinct note of stammering slurred audio that started sounding like acid rock crossed with Sesame Street character songs; and the videos were looking as blurry as frozen fog…maybe that was my imaginary friends playing a trick on me. I hope the Sheriff is noting progress with a smile…or at least a chagrin! 😉 Summary – Initial experience was an excellent celebratory choice for ANGEL DAY! Each subsequent glass was just as good as the first – WOW! Here is yet another NW selection definitely going on my reorder list…need to keep at least two or three of these on ice at ALL times! Thanks Wayne…AWESOMENESS! Rating – Based upon my limited amateur experience, I’m rating at 95%.

Sam-I-Am on Jacqueline Bahue Gomes Vineyard Albarino 2017
9. Jacqueline Bahue; 2017; Gomes Vineyard Albariño; Acampo CA Initial Nose – Bold and buttery…in a Chardonnay sort of way (since being unfamiliar with Albariño, I don’t know what else to use to compare). Initial Pallet – Again, new to this varietal, has a moderate, fruity sense that opens the pallet and stays about the same across the entire tasting area. Initial Finish – Slight initial tartness amidst the fruitiness that did not last long. Served with – After a day in court and a long transport drive after, I decided to cook a 20-30 minute meal (so said the instructions – HA!). Anyway, I prepared a “Blue Apron ®” menu item – Mexican Beef Bowls. Quite spicy and tasty with the fruity Albariño! 😊 2nd Glass Nose – With the addition of the spicy dish, the nose softened a bit, but maintained a fruity aroma! 2nd Glass Pallet – Again, quite a wonderful balance between spicy and fruity – WOW! 2nd Glass Finish – The initial tartness originally experienced was hardly noticeable with the spiciness on the tongue! The fruitiness stayed through the entire cycle! Served with – a second bowl of this delectable dish! Summary – I allowed this new varietal experience to air in the glass for the first 5 – 10 minutes; sipped while I was preparing the meal, and finished the glass with the first bowl. Finished the 2nd glass with the 2nd bowl – Oh My! I highly recommend this be served with a spicy or bold-flavored meal – balances with the fruitiness in a most wonderful way! WELL DONE Jacqueline! 😊 Rating – Based upon my limited Naked Angel experience, I’m rating at 90%.
Sam-I-Am on Sharon Weeks Cattoo Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
Sam-I-Am on Arabella Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
Sam-I-Am on Sharon Weeks Cattoo Paso Robles Malbec 2016
9. Sharon Weeks; 2016; CATTOO Paso Robles Malbec; California (Actually from Case #3) Cork – Subtle, light hint of bold wine aroma! Initial Nose – Significantly strong aromas of bold flavors: blackberry, pipe tobacco, and black pepper are most evident! [Okay, truth be told, I had to read Sharon’s label to get all that. Still an Angel in training!] Initial Pallet – Distinct full red flavor, savored and balanced over the entire pallet! Initial Finish – The bold flavors stayed for an extended period with a subtle, barely noticeable tartness at the back. Served with – Relaxing in the glider on the porch after a long day at work; listening to the chickens go to roost while mesmerized by the sun’s orange glowing descent behind the western ridge. As my sister often said; “Who needs fifty shades of gray when one has a thousand shades of green!” 2nd Glass Nose – Strong balance of aromas as before! 2nd Glass Pallet – The wonderful mix of flavors were enhanced with a greater sense of vanilla and fruitiness (see “Served with below -). 2nd Glass Finish – Smoooooooth and long lasting! Served with – OMG! I had a sweet tooth attack…decided to have some Häagen-Dazs ice cream. Since this delectable delicacy comes in a single-serving container, I decided to have my second glass of this Malbec (my least favorite wine) with a choice selection of my least favorite ice cream, Cherry Vanilla crème de la crème ala Häagen-Dazs. As I said, OMG! The balance of flavors was AWESOME! The sweetness of the cherry vanilla blended exceptionally well with the blackberry, mocha, and sage as I alternated sips of Malbec between bites of ice cream! WOW – who’d have thought! What an excellent way to enjoy both! 😊 Summary – Even with a purrfect foil (vice the usual “angel” on top) [which, OBTW Sharon, I have an idea for you to blend the kitty and the angel; not so sure NW will approve, though.] and an actual cork, the introduction of this bold and tasty red with the first scents and sips provided a nice anticipation of what was to come! I allowed the first full glass to air for about a half hour and was surprised with the variety of flavors. The second glass, paired with the sweetness of Cherry Vanilla ice cream actually rocked my evening! Though I’m not a big fan of Malbec, this one will go on my list to have handy to share with others and, perhaps, my next single serving of Häagen-Dazs! Rating – Based upon my limited NW ANGEL experience and bearing in mind that I’m not an experienced Malbec Connie-Sewer, I’m rating at 90%.
Sam-I-Am on Dave Harvey Columbia Valley GSMmm Syrah 2016
Sam-I-Am on Jen Pfeiffer The Rebel Tempranillo 2017
1. Jen Pfeiffer; 2017; The Rebel Tempranillo; Victoria, Australia Initial Nose – VERY bold…and I mean VERY! Full red aromas; almost like a Malbec-based blend. The black cherry, dark berries, and spices are quite evident; didn’t fully sense the chocolate. Initial Pallet – I sense cherry, black berry, and perhaps blue berry flavors; only a subtle sense of chocolate (Thank Goodness); very well balanced throughout the taste experience! Initial Finish – The spiciness is cued at the finish; present but not overly so. Served with – Laundry…yep; doing THAT thing again! 😊 It seems routine chores go so much better with wine. If you haven’t tried it, you ought to! While the loads swim and tumble, I am also cleaning my empty bedroom, preparing for new furniture delivery. Not long from now I will begin creating my “wine room” – visions of splendor dance in my head. Okay, maybe that’s the wine! 2nd Glass Nose – After the first glass is gone, the sense of chocolate is there and, perhaps, a touch of tobacco? 2nd Glass Pallet – Just as smooth as the first…thin, but long legs mirror the long-lasting balanced taste of this bold and beautiful red! 2nd Glass Finish – Just enough spice to excite the experience of the lasting, flavorful after taste! Served with – The finishing touches of folding and hanging laundry. Chores are almost done…ready to relax and focus on enjoying the next glass! Summary – I let it air for about 45 minutes before sampling…though it was difficult to wait after getting a full nose of wonderful aromas! The wait was worth it – a full-flavored bold red taste that balanced well across the tongue and remained tasty through the slightly spicy finish. I believe this Tempranillo must age a bit on the shelf before it’s full potential will be reached. So glad I have three more bottles to save! Thanks, you Aussie Red Head for a GREAT experience for my first Tempranillo! 😊 Rating – Based upon my limited Naked Angel experience, I’m rating at 92.5%.
Sam-I-Am on Sharon Weeks Reserve Lodi Old Vine Zinfandel 2016
7. Sharon Weeks; 2016; Cattoo Reserve Old Vine Zinfandel; Lodi CA (Actually from Case #3) Cork – Lyk dat ferner Marrickeoh Myorka (Mauricio Lorca) feller, “twernt nun,” 2th Nekked Wyn bottl taint got no cawk! Smelt perty goot doe! 😊 Initial Nose – Pleasant and bold…mixed senses, as described on the bottle (thanks for that Sharon!) Initial Pallet – Bold dry front…subtle variety of flavors; smooth experience! Initial Finish – Slight tingle in the tongue with the flavorful aftertaste! Served with – preps for a decent meal…actually felt like cooking again. Figured I’d taste the 1st glass right out of the bottle without waiting and have the 2nd with dinner after a little aeration. 2nd Glass Nose – Blended with the aroma of the dish…quite a pairing! 2nd Glass Pallet – Full, clear flavors of peppery blueberry that balanced the sweetness of the bourbon-pork exceptionally well. 2nd Glass Finish – Ooh Wee! Such a moderately sweet, with a slight sense of dry peppery zip! Oh, my! Must have a third…’cause there were only 3 glasses in the bottle…still trying to figure that out. 😊 Served with – after a bit of aeration, I enjoyed this Cattoo Zin with a fairly decent crockpot meal of fresh, farm-raised (down the road from me), grain fed, totally organic pork roast (marinated in a mixture of Maker’s Mark KY bourbon, Chautauqua Vineyards (FL) Muscadine wine, and Sprite - for about 18 hours) with whipped mashed potatoes using coconut milk, green beans and peas. MAHVUHLES! Summary – OMG! The flavors of the food blended exceptionally well with the aromas and flavors of the wine! I might have to remember this out-of-the-crack recipe and do it again…oh, my! 😊 Rating – Based upon my limited ANGEL (see, Kevin? I can still learn new things! 😊) experience, I’m rating at 95%.
Jacqueline Bahue Carte Blanche Sonoma Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2017
$19.99
Sam-I-Am on Jacqueline Bahue Carte Blanche Sonoma Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2017
1. Jacqueline Bahue; 2017; Carte Blanche Sauvignon Blanc; Sonoma Valley Initial Nose – Definite hints of tropical fruits and the green apple stands right out and smacks you in the olfactory with a sweet tartness! Initial Pallet – Very smooth across the tongue with a well-balanced sense of light, fruity flavors with a slight acidic pucker factor. Initial Finish – The front of the finish had a brief bit of tartness (green apples are like that!), but the finale was all fruity smoothness! Served with – Oh-Dark-Early morning porch sitting…after 15-hours of work in the last 20-hour day (up at 05:15, finished at 01:30). Needless to say, tired but not exactly sleepy. Amidst the humid 72-degree, 78% humidity, foggy morning air, I needed something crisp, cool, and refreshing to sit on the porch in my rocker and play dodge-tail with the kitty cats! No worries, Kevin (and Don’t call me Shirley), Kevin and Turk are just fine! 😉 2nd Glass Nose – After sitting opened in the fridge for a few hours, the second (maybe it was the third) nose was a bit subtler than the first. 2nd Glass Pallet – Still very smooth across the pallet, again – only a slight sharpness, with flavors just as bold as before. 2nd Glass Finish – Savory flavors with a slight tartness lasted a fair piece through the swallow. Served with – Later that day…midday movies and reading emails! Slept a few hours, woke to the neighbor’s checking to ensure I was alive (hadn’t seen me in a few days); decided to stay up. Might as well follow the coffee regimen with a light snack of ham-n-smoked cheddar cheese sammich, dill chips, and more of Jackie’s Blanc. GREAT combination…and, yes, the Sauvignon Blanc aired a bit has stronger flavors and less tartness. Still quite yummy! Summary – After a really long day that ends in the wee hours of the night, it’s often a challenge to decide whether or not to go straight to bed or stay up for a bit and let the mind settle down. A light refreshment and simple entertainment can often settle the mind relatively quickly. Choosing a gentle, chilled aperitif seemed in order and Jacqueline’s Sauvignon Blanc seemed to be the ticket! No food required; just simple porch sitting, enjoying the company of playful kittens. Jackie – AWESOME pairing; first and second tasting! Thank You for producing such a great taste for us simple folks! Rating – Based upon my limited Naked Angel experience, I’m rating at 90%.
Sam-I-Am on Sharon Weeks Cattoo California Red 2016
10. Sharon Weeks; 2016; CATTOO Red Blend; California (Actually from Case #3) Cork – Sorry, has a modern-day screw top. Bottle screwed? Initial Nose – Full sense of “red” flavors…but definitely NOT a Malbec! All the variety of reds blend well, but too much for this novice Angel to identify separately. No worries, I don’t feel bad about that; it’s still GREAT wine! Initial Pallet – Again, BOLD Red flavors across the pallet; will balance well with red meats of ANY kind. Initial Finish – Slight sense of tannins and a tartness at the front, but with a very smooth, balanced flavor at the back that lasted for a good little while! Served with – Meat Loaf…but NOT exactly what you might think. Chilling with my favorite imaginary drinking buddies (me, myself, and I) [only because my psychiatrist recommended not drinking alone] after a hard day’s night of dispatch, a day of playing referee in court, and a broken patrol car. Anyway…avoiding the summer heat by staying inside in an air-conditioned fantasy world watching an AXS TV rockumentary about the rock opera musician Meat Loaf. I know, NOT food (for thought?), but it’s still a “dish” that excites the pallet (well, maybe a bit south of that). 😉 2nd Glass Nose – After airing a bit, there seemed to be more aromas than the “red blend” as before, but more distinctly, as a beginning student of viticulture, separate hints of Merlot, Cabernet, and Pinot Noir. I could be wrong, but, hey, wouldn’t be the first time and not likely the last either! 2nd Glass Pallet – Again, as aired I distinctly caught separate flavors; VERY pleasant to the pallet, setting in mind thoughts of various dishes with which I would gladly pair these blends. 2nd Glass Finish – Long slow finish…as are the legs in this blend; strong and flavorful! Served with – Ran out of Meat Loaf after the hour-long show and, instead of an AXS Chicago concert (without Terry Kath and Peter Cetera), in celebration of this California blend, I chose my 2nd and 3rd glasses with a different fantasy, via a few parental training episodes of Showtime’s Californication; compliments of Netflix! I’m fairly sure David Duchovny can appreciate fine wine from the Angels! Show reminds me a lot of my past…maybe I shouldn’t have said that! Anyway; my psychiatrist would be proud, I actually ate food with the wine…as long as crackers and cheese count as food! 😉 Summary – This is a very strong red blend that I believe will balance well with strong meat dishes…grilled, oven-fried, or baked Italian dishes with peppers, onions, and mushrooms come to mind. The young glass was fresh, but the older glasses showed the value of properly aged fineness! Let it air a bit and you will welcome the seasoned flavors! Rating – Based upon my limited NW ANGEL experience, I’m rating at 90%.
