Brian on Ana Diogo-Draper Amador Touriga 2017

I really regret opening this wine because it holds so much promise for aging, I feel I did it an injustice. Having said that, I can honestly say it was just so earthy, rich, smooth and surprisingly dry, it blew us all away, even our most discretionary wine connoisseur. It has medium acidity, more tannins than expected, and is surprisingly well balanced with the promise of greater things to come with aging. The color is a startling black-red like a ruby on a moonless night. The rim is like liquid velvet. The nose is black fruit and cocoa with a hint of pepper. The palate is unbelievably rich in dry black fruit with black plum, black raspberry, blackberry, black cherry unusually mingled to create a shockingly deep taste experience. There are cocoa and bitter dark chocolate overtones as well. It finishes long with a little hint of tobacco which made me rush to grab a Padron anniversary series. This is a totally underrated wine. I served it with my own recipe for Cozido à Portuguesa made with bison and venison along with Açorda (I use beef broth) and a nice slice of aged Queijo de Évora cheese. This is a wine that can stand up to any meal but is so superior when paired with rich food. This is definitely one to buy a case of and lay down for at least 5 years.

Brian on Camille Benitah Napa Valley Volute 2016

A powerful, full-bodied, meat wine in the superb tradition of the old world. It's both classic and classy. A crimson rose at midnight red with an excellent rim. Well balanced with excellent tannins and acidity. I would have loved to lay this bottle down but I had an occasional meal for special guests for which it was perfect. A very rich nose with currant, dry cedar, spices and a hint of grass. The palate is strong dry fruit with black plum, black cherry, the dark currant prominent in the nose, and some warm cinnamon. The finish is long and mellow and seems to sweeten with a touch of caramel. I served it with Chateaubriand, roast Yukon potatoes and kidney pie. I would recommend always having a bottle of this on hand for special guests.

Brian on F. Stephen Millier Black Label Zinfandel Amador County 2016

It is always a rare treat when you find a wine you can really sink your teeth into. This is a super California Tempranillo Zinfandel with excellent complexity and rich enough in taste and aroma to stand up to even the most demanding meal. The nose is dark and dry with plum, cocoa and a surprising amount of oak. The palate is full fruit with a consistent layer of caramel and some spicy pepper. It finishes with the perfect level of acidity for a pungent meal. I served it with my recipe for Guatemalan chili (5 kinds of peppers in a heavy {bison} meat tomato sauce sweetened with freshly cooked blackberries. It was acclaimed by all to be far and away the best wine companion I have ever served with this meal. My compliments Mr. Millier!

This was a surprising discovery. An almost shockingly complex, superb quality, and totally unique Pinot Noir. The absolutely beautiful color entices and the extraordinary rim makes one want to swirl the wine over and over just to see this magic in the glass. The acidity is very well balanced and the tannins are perfect. The prominent nose is sweet cherry followed by strawberry-banana. The full-bodied flavor begins with a rich creamy custard filled with currants and a hint of chocolate. It finishes with a tart cherry that is slightly and pleasantly peppery. Well done indeed Coni!

This is an unusually selective wine that needs careful pairing to be fully appreciated. Its acidity is quite high and it has a tart finish so I paired it with raw oysters and it proved a magnificent accompaniment. The nose is rather prominent with grassy and green apple notes touched with sweet wildflowers. The palate teases a bit of fruit up front with hints of pineapple, ripe pears, and Spanish melon. It finishes quite tart which is perfect against the oysters. This has definitely become my go-to wine for that particular seafood delight.

Another rubied gem from Sharon Weeks. Ruby in color this is a rich and juicy cabernet. It has beautifully mild tannins, well-balanced acidity, and just the right complexity. It does need to breathe, breathe, breathe. Its such a fun companion for an afternoon cookout it's worth the wait. Rather oaky on the nose with sour cherry and a smattering of other red fruits. The flavors are predominately dark red fruits framed by sour cherry with a dry chocolate after taste and a very light tobacco tone. It finishes well flowing nicely after the grilled bison burgers into the rocky road ice cream we had for dessert. Thanks, Sharon!

Very easy drinking wine perfect for new wine drinkers. Superb balance with mild acidity. I believe I detected very delicate barrel tannins. It benefits from being opened a bit. The nose is deliciously smooth which heralds this nicely buttery chardonnay. The palate is lightly oaky with hints of pineapple and tangerine with a touch of tart lemon. I paired it with eggrolls consisting of steamed pork, pan-fried dulse seaweed, and goat cheese. Regretfully, we only had one bottle.

Another F. Stephen Millier Home Run! Very nice balance with good tannins and most worthy of drinking without aging although I'd recommend getting additional bottles to lay down since this is a wine that will improve with age. The nose is quite jammy and that caused me to change the food pairing at the last minute. The palate is a riot of dark fruits (black cherries, purple plums, blackberries) with chocolate overtones and hints of spices and vanilla. It finishes clean and dry without the pepper Zins usually have. I paired it with White Chicken Curry, Saag Paneer, and Naan with chutney. It was insanely good at this meal.

This is an impressive downright beautiful Cabernet that is velvety and complex enough to drink now but deserves to be laid down to reach its full potential. An excellent full mouth with the sweet dark cherry fruits and dark chocolates that particularly appeal to my palette is perfectly balanced by quite mild tannins and acid. It finishes nicely with a touch of oak and a hint of vanilla.

This is a very underrated, undervalued Viognier. Extremely nice balance with subtle and beautifully persistent acidity and a nice touch of oak. Its a beautiful pale color in the glass and sparkles in a bright sun between a shiny lemon and the silver/gold of starlight. The nose is on the sweeter side with honey, lemon flowers, ripe peach, and green melon. The palate has an amazing combination of mild cloying flavors (apricot, pear, lemon/lime, pineapple, mango), and microbursts of flavors like kiwi and vanilla. It finished cleanly with just a hint of honey. I served this with fish and chips and it proved a stupendous expression of the Viognier grape.

What a richly passionate, full-bodied table wine perfect for an Italian feast! The Negroamaro grape gives this wine a beautifully rich purple in the glass. Nice acidity for the meal with a full complement of tannins. Its nose is very earthy with spices like cinnamon with a dash of pepper and black tea in a dark fruit base. Warming barrage of fruits (plums, dark cherries, cranberries, blackberries) chases one's palate with each sip. It has a surprising buttery finish. I served this with my mother's old family recipe for spaghetti (spinach pasta with 5 kinds of tomatoes and herbs in a heavy meat sauce) garnished with hard-boiled eggs. It honored the meal and evoked praise from everyone at the table. Definitely a treasure!

Oh my, this Reisling is like a delicious walk through a meadow of wildflowers with a delicate taste of honey teasing you to take another sip. Rick Boyer demonstrates his mastery here of this almost universally appealing wine. Even the non-wine drinkers at the table enjoyed it. I served it with a variety of Moroccan hors-d'oeuvres followed by lamb and goat kabobs. It is always the measure of a wine that is a true treasure when it can flow seamlessly from the beginning to the end of a meal without losing its character to the more piquant or more substantial courses.
