About the wine
Your ultimate Alexander Valley Cabernet
- Daryl's worked with this single terraced hillside vineyard since the early 1990s, when he was making expensive Alexander Valley Cab for Geyser Peak.
- Thanks to his long relationship with the grower, Daryl got first dibs on this high-end fruit (for a smidgen of the price!) to make the decadent Cab he calls "silky, structured, and sexy." It's full of rich texture and soft, smoky notes of vanilla and chocolate.
- This is quintessential Alexander Valley Cabernet (think big price tag Cabs outside of Napa like Silver Oak, Geyser Peak, etc.) and your former Sweet Spot Wine of the Year. You're getting incredible value for money – because you make it possible!
Best before
Will easily keep for 20 years. Lovely drinking now, especially for a Cabernet that will be ideal in 3-5 years (that's when the wine has softened in bottle, but still retains some fresh fruit vibrance).
Serving advice
Serve at room temperature or just below. If drinking soon after purchase, best enjoyed with food. Will not go well with desserts if drinking young.
Food match
A nice juicy ribeye or lamb loin chops are best... but goddamn I love it with a hamburger and pizza, too.
Contains sulphites
Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Daryl Groom
- Meet Daryl... a 35-year veteran of the wine biz, credited eight-times as Winemaker of the Year, named by Food & Wine Magazine as one of 11 visionaries to change the world of wine... and oh yes, he served up his wines at the Oscars and Emmys two years in a row! Safe to say, the man's accomplished.
- Working as the senior white and red winemaker at Penfolds, his 1986 Penfolds Grange was arguably one of the top 3 Granges ever made - 98 points from Spectator and Robert Parker. And now that he works for you, he loves showing off wines from Australia and his California home – Sonoma and Russian River Valley.
- Thanks to your funding, Daryl can focus on doing what he loves – making great wine and sharing great wine. And he selects the best barrels he needs and farms to the best quality. "You are a gift from God to a winemaker," he says. "I knew there were Angels in heaven!"
–– "Groom made Penfolds' flagship red, Grange Hermitage, which has become Australia's most collectible wine." --Wine Spectator, on the $500+ Grange
–– "Groom is my choice for Winemaker of the Year " -- LA Times, Dan Berger
–– "Daryl Groom. The human Tornado. " -- Bill Rice, Chicago Tribune
