DRG Daryl Groom Barossa Shiraz 2018
About the wine
Powerful, refined, top-notch Shiraz from Daryl, the Angel-funded master of Aussie reds
- This rich red is steeped in all the hallmark flavors of classic Aussie-style Shiraz – bold, juicy dark fruits (think ripe raspberry right out of the briar patch), effortlessly balanced with a touch of oaky savoriness and silky-smooth mouthfeel for a wine that steals the show every single time.
- This stunning Shiraz grew in Daryl's very own corner of Barossa Valley, where the warm, dry growing season makes the vines work a little harder, giving him fruit that’s flush with full, complex and oh-so-concentrated flavors.
- Daryl’s estate vineyard sits right near the vines for Penfolds, the iconic Australian winery where he was once the winemaker behind some of the most famous Shiraz in the world. Now he’s making his own top-shelf Shiraz just for you and at a fraction of the price.
Best before
This wine will age well. If you like bold, juicy, in-your-face red wines with a little grip, drink it now. If you like full fruit but with a little more softness, drink it in a year. If you like your wines soft and complex, aging it for +5 years will reward you. It has great acid, so this will also help hold it up for many years to come.
Serving advice
If you are enjoying the wine in its youth, sometimes a little aeration helps bring out the fruit and soften the edges. Personally I like to just pour straight from the bottle and aerate and swirl in the glass. Best served at room temperature, around 68ºF or below.
Food match
Red meats like beef, lamb and game. It also goes great with Indian food if you want a red wine with this cuisine.
Contains sulphites
Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Daryl Groom
- Meet Daryl... a 35-year veteran of the wine biz, credited eight-times as Winemaker of the Year, named by Food & Wine Magazine as one of 11 visionaries to change the world of wine... and oh yes, he served up his wines at the Oscars and Emmys two years in a row! Safe to say, the man's accomplished.
- Working as the senior white and red winemaker at Penfolds, his 1986 Penfolds Grange was arguably one of the top 3 Granges ever made - 98 points from Spectator and Robert Parker. And now that he works for you, he loves showing off wines from Australia and his California home – Sonoma and Russian River Valley.
- Thanks to your funding, Daryl can focus on doing what he loves – making great wine and sharing great wine. And he selects the best barrels he needs and farms to the best quality. "You are a gift from God to a winemaker," he says. "I knew there were Angels in heaven!"
