Sam Plunkett Tait Hamilton Vineyard Shiraz 2015
About the wine
Sam's sublime single vineyard Shiraz
- This is a big wine not to be taken lightly! Full of aromas like plums, dark berries, chocolate and raisins... one whiff, and you're in a heavenly bakery.
- The grapes for this wine are handpicked by Tait Hamilton from his magnificent vineyards in Heathcoate, on the border of the Australia's Mount Camel Ranges.
- Sam says: "It’s pretty straight forward to make a good wine with fantastic fruit like this… but to show at its best it needs good (read expensive) new oak barrels. Thanks to you, I was able to buy luxury oak which takes this wine to the next level."
Best before
Reds made from very ripe fruit like this have a plushness that makes them approachable and enjoyable when young, and we'll drink this wine at home as a youngster. But the weight and tannin also gives it capacity to age, certainly 5 years, and for people who like more savory wine, perhaps up to 8 years.
Serving advice
The warm alcohol will feel a little tamer if served at a cool room temperature (say 59ºF), rather than central heating 69ºF room temperature.
Food match
We have a great butcher in Avenel, and ideally we'd have a piece of aged beef from Scotty to go with this Shiraz. But in truth it's pretty versatile wine. Pair with any red meat, and perhaps follow on with a hard cheese instead of dessert.
Contains sulphites
Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Sam Plunkett
- Sam is one of our Australian All-Stars. He garnered lots of attention as the award-winning winemaker at Plunkett Fowles.
- But Plunkett Fowles hit rough waters and Sam wasn't sure he'd be able to stay in the wine business...until he became Angel funded. Your support put his startup on the map.
- Now Sam is off to the races – with the same dedication to quality winemaking that won so many accolades at Plunkett Fowles – and none of the bother about sales and marketing.
