About the wine
Refined, barrel-aged Spanish red blend of Grenache and Carignan
- This savory, full-bodied and complex red blend is equal parts Grenache and Carignan, packed with dark fruit flavors and the unique power that wines from the Priorat region in southern Catalonia are famous for.
- Your support helped Franck source certified organic Grenache and Carignan from a steep hillside vineyard planted on Priorat’s distinct black slate soil. The conditions here force the vines to work harder, resulting in lower yields, but much more intense flavors per grape.
- Franck chose the name "Retrat" (Catalán for “portrait”) for the picture this wine paints of the Priorat region, capturing its unique character, from the soils and climate to the people who lovingly tend the vines and work to bring this wine to you.
Best before
This powerful red will age well for the next 5-8 years, but it could be kept for over 10 years or more if stored carefully.
Serving advice
Decanting always helps to aerate the wine, so if you have a decanter at home, do not hesitate to take it and give it a good shake! Otherwise, simply letting the wine air out and breathe for at least half an hour before enjoying it should also do the trick.
Food match
It is a wine of great definition that would match superbly with a pan-fried ribeye of beef served simply with triple cooked chips. Other favorite dishes include robust butifarra sausages, a hearty veal and mushroom dish called fricandó, and roasted vegetables served with the tangy "romesco" sauce.
Contains sulphites
Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Franck Massard
- Top sommelier-turned-winemaker, Mr. Massard is shaking up the little-known region of Montsant. Using modern winemaking methods, Franck's taking this wine region into a new stratosphere of quality.
- We think Franck's got natural talent which is why we've used Angel funding to help him to grow his winery. Which means you get tomorrow's medal winners at today's prices!
- Recommended to us by Benjamin Darnault, Franck's spent the last few years making tiny parcels of wine. Already a Silver medal winner, we've snapped him up before anyone else does.
