03232022 Quickie Update: Hey there, Peeps! I opened another bottle of the 2018 I had resting in the cellar. Just wanted to pop in to let you know it is quite an amazing wine. Still silky smooth, and delicious! If you have not tried this gem of a red blend yet, why not? The 2020 vintage is available, so make sure you grab some! Bas vers le haut! Original Post: I recently received a wine I am pretty sure I have tried outside of NakedWines.com from DRG (his Colby Red) and have always loved it, so while it may not be called the same here, it sounds like WE now get to buy this great wine directly from Nakedwines.com. Score! So, this may be a bit of a spoiler then, eh? Well, let's see how the 2018 vintage tastes! The color in the glass is nice bing cherry skin to flesh as it thins out to the edge. Sniffy sniff time – so many fruits on the nose, with cherry, plum, blackberry, and nice spices, like clove, with a "cabin in the woods smell" finishing it off (likely the oak, but makes me think of the cabin, Peeps). Smells awesome! Tasty Taste time – Silky smooth texture upon entry to the palate, with much of the same fruit carrying onto the palate as well, general savory notes from the oak, with some hints of mushroom as well. Medium tannins, and acidity, with a the smoooooth velvety texture continuing through the finish, with a touch of cassis, and black tea. Amazing! As you likely guessed - I would be hard pressed to not enjoy a wine blend I have enjoyed before (and if Daryl surprises me and says this is not that wine, then kudos on a 2nd blend that is another favorite)! If you love red blends, you MUST try this wine! If you don't like red blends, try it anyway - as you will be helping to heal hearts all over the country! Sweeties - you may not like this one, true, as it could be too dry for you, but maybe try it as well, or share it with some friends. For $11 a bottle, what's not to like? 5 hearts! Time to bottle this one up...remember you are in the #1 BEST PLACE at Nakedwines.com (according to USA Today and ME), and one of the 10 best wine clubs (so says Wine Enthusiast and ME) - for the year 2019…Let's do it again in 2020! Chris on Franck Massard Mas Sardana Cava NV
Back to some wines in the cellar I have not had a chance to review as yet. Starting with a pop, tonight, as I popped open Franck's Mas Sardana sparkler. This is a bottle of Spanish bubbles (not sure I have had one of those, let alone one of Franck's wines before - so a first for both)! Let's see how this tastes! The color in the glass is a bright gold. Sniffy sniff time – Apple fruit on the nose, with some honeysuckle, and a touch of kiwi. Tasty Taste time – Onto the palate we go, with first thing noted is effervescent bubbles! Love that! The apple fruit continues to show here, with some hints of lemon, a touch of grapefruit, and some warm bread. Very crisp acidity, and the bubbles continue to amaze! Some minerality and a bit of limestone to the finish. Excellent! For a debut for me, Franck's Spanish bubbles are amazing! Clean, semi-dry, flavorful, and zingy, this sparkler will please regularly. At <$13 a bottle, it's an awesome price as well - so time to stock up (I know I will)...um - once it's back in stock, that is...keep an eye out for it! Sweeties - give this one a try if you like bubbles, as I think you may enjoy even though likely not sweet enough for you...see what you think! For me, this one gets 5 hearts! Time to bottle this one up...remember you are in the #1 BEST PLACE at Nakedwines.com (according to USA Today and ME), and one of the 10 best wine clubs (so says Wine Enthusiast and ME) - for the year 2019…Let's do it again in 2020 - contest is on NOW so go vote now! Chris on Mauricio Lorca Angels Selection Chardonnay 2019
Ok, Peeps! Got a new wine to try from Mauricio Lorca! I've enjoyed a number of Mauricio's wines going all the way back to his 2012 Torrontes (the first I tried), and it was great! I think this may be the 1st Chardonnay of his I have tried, though (I need to take a look). Let's see how it is! The color in the glass is a very pale gold. Sniffy sniff time – caramelized apple, ripe banana, and slight hints of mango on the nose, with nice floral notes showing as well, and a touch of oak. Tasty Taste time – Apple, and Pineapple fruit showing, with light buttery notes, and creamy oak, finishing with some citrus zest. Some nice acidity for this chard also strikes a balance between the very light acidic kinds, and the heavy buttery kinds. Very nice! This is another great wine from Mauricio, and one I will thoroughly enjoy finishing over the next couple days. It's been a while since I have opened a chardonnay, I think, and this one was a good choice to open and taste! Sweeties, while you can give this one a try, this may be too dry for you...so tread wisely. For me, though, this one gets 4.5 hearts! Time to bottle this one up...remember you are in the #1 BEST PLACE at Nakedwines.com (according to USA Today and ME), and one of the 10 best wine clubs (so says Wine Enthusiast and ME) - for the year 2019…Let's do it again in 2020! Chris on Cellar Cru California Rose 2019
Wow - was it a HOT day here...so I grabbed the new Cellar Cru Rose to enjoy! I have had 2 other wines from that group, and while the white was good, the red was great. This is the 2019 vintage of a Rose that recently arrived, so let's see how it tastes compared to the others! Ready? Let's go! The color in the glass is a bright pink - this wine is "pretty in pink" it appears (a great classic movie as well)! Sniffy sniff time – I'm picking up some strawberry fruit, some floral notes, and a hint of tar on the nose. Tasty Taste time – The strawberry fruit continues onto the palate, with some nice watermelon, maybe a bit close to the rind, with a touch of lemon zest on the finish. Nice acidity, and juicy flavors make this quite the enjoyable summer sipper! So, while the white was good, and the red was great, I'm finding I like this Rose best of the three wines I have tried from the Cellar Crew to date. At <$10 a bottle, the price is right also, so grab up some to chill out with by the pool this summer, as you won't be disappointed. Sweeties, give this a try as I think you will enjoy it. This one gets 4.5 hearts from me! Time to bottle this one up...remember you are in the #1 BEST PLACE at Nakedwines.com (according to USA Today and ME), and one of the 10 best wine clubs (so says Wine Enthusiast and ME) - for the year 2019…Let's do it again in 2020 - contest is on NOW so go vote! https://www.10best.com/awards/travel/best-wine-club-2020/ - Bas vers le haut!
Chris on Matt Parish Louie's Block Old Vine Zinfandel 2018
My wait is finally over, yep, yep...I have opened Matt's new Zinfandel release - the Louie's Block old vine zin from contra costa county 2018. I saved this one from my recent case (thinking I am saving the best for last, as I love Matt's wines). Let's see how this Zin tastes and see if I was right! The color in the glass is a deep cranberry to garnet and I can see my fingers through the glass. Sniffy sniff time – Cranberry fruit notes on the nose, with some cherry fruit, hints of clove spice, and burnt cedar. Tasty Taste time – The cherry fruit is showing on the palate, with some black plum, hint of jolly rancher, and tobacco, with nice oak, and some earthiness to the rich and savory finish. Medium tannins and acidity, with a very smooth texture. Super nice! Oh boy - this was worth the wait, Peeps! If you love Old Vine Zins, or savory red wines, grab some of this before it is gone. Sweeties, though, I don't think you will care for it (as much as I wish you did, as Matt makes great wines - his Rose may be closer to what you could try, but even those are fairly dry) - but for me and my $$ at Nakedwines.com, I know I can't go wrong with a Matt Parish wine - awesome! 5 hearts! Chris on Ondine Chattan Mendocino Sauvignon Blanc 2018
06262020 Update: I got to meet Ondine (indirectly) at a recent Thirsty Thursday event, and she was so knowledgeable, and a delight to learn from. I realized I'd only been able to try a couple of her wines to that point, so I quickly made an order to procure some of her recent wines I had not gotten to taste yet. However, before I jump into her Chard and Memento, I opened another bottle of her 2018 SB to see if it's changed at all since last bottle. Answer? Not too much - still bright, flavorful, and with crisp acidity that I enjoyed last time. A really really nice Sauvignon Blanc. Glad I was able to get another to enjoy! If you want a nice chilled SB to enjoy on a hot and muggy day like we had today, this is one to grab up! Still 4.5 hearts for me! Bas vers le haut! Original Review: It may be a bit late today, but the weather was hot, so a good day to try Ondine’s 2018 Sauvignon Blanc. You Peeps that know me know I’m not a big SB varietal lover, but I did love Ondine’s first wine I tried recently (her Pinot Noir), so, wanted to be sure to begin trying her others. So, are you ready? Let’s go! The color in the glass is a silver blonde. Sniffy Sniff Time – A plethora of citrus fruit greets my nose, with some lemon and lime, and some fresh cut grass. Tasty Taste Time – Moving onto the palate, a nice and crisp acidity gives this wine some zing! The lemon fruit is there, with a touch of pineapple (not much, mind you, but there it is), wet stone minerality, and some chalk dust. The finish is mouth watering and quite juicy, and you are left with some zesty flavors tingling the tongue. Ok – so this SB is a really good SB, Peeps! Decent price as well at $13. As long as you like a dry white, you should give this one a try! If you do like dry whites, or SBs in general, well grab some for your next get together! Ondine is 2 for 2 now, for me! Her Pinot and now her SB both score 4.5 hearts! Time to bottle this one up...remember you are in the #1 BEST PLACE at Nakedwines.com (according to USA Today and ME), and one of the 10 best wine clubs (so says Wine Enthusiast and ME) - for the year 2019…Let's do it again in 2020! Bas vers le haut!
Chris on Benjamin Darnault Pique Nique Rose 2019
Opened up one of Ben's newer releases - the 2019 Pique Nique Rose. As my Peeps know, I love his Minervois that began my enjoyment of Ben's wines at Nakedwines.com, and have gotten to try many others (this is my 17th wine of his to try). This will be my 3rd vintage of Pique Nique to taste, so let's see what I think! The color in the glass is a pale salmon. Sniffy sniff time – Citrus notes greet the nose, with some raspberry fruit as well, and some minerality. Tasty Taste time – Swirling the wine around the palate, with the raspberry and some strawberry fruit showing, wet rock, and a touch of cinnamon. Nice acidity, and a fruit filled finish with hints of lemon zest. Very nice! Well Peeps, that makes a trifecta of great vintages of Ben's Pique Nique Rose for me (unfortunately, I missed the 17&18). I rated the others 4.5 hearts. While sweeties, this one likely is too dry for you, feel free to try it out, but be prepared. For me, this is wonderful and refreshing, and gets another 4.5 heart score! Chris on Ondine Chattan Russian River Chardonnay 2018
I have been sitting on Ondine's 2018 Chardonnay - ok - figuratively sitting on this wine, Peeps - it's been resting in the cellar for a bit, and decided to finally crack it open and see what I think. Ondine makes fines wines to pair with the fine words of her posts (ok, and food as well) - this lady enjoys winemaking AND writing. Nuff said, let's see how this one tastes! The color in the glass is a bright gold, and of course, I'd be remiss if I didn't comment on the amazing labels (still prefer the Memento colors best), but classy label design! Sniffy sniff time – Apple fruit shows on the nose, with buttered toast, and a hint of caramel - smells awesome! Tasty Taste time – As the wine flows across the palate, the apple fruit is present, some quince, and hints of butter and creamy oak, with nice citrus fruit as well. Nicely balanced with smooth texture and acidity that gives a mild zing on the finish which coats the palace with flavors that linger. Yummy! Ondine's 4th wine for me is another consistent winner! QPR is amazing as this is <$10 a bottle - stock up on some of this, Peeps (when it's back in stock - hopefully). Sweeties, well, I think you should give this one a try. Yep, I think while Semi-dry to me, you might enjoy this one - should have enough sweetness for you. For me, this one gets 4.5 hearts - yep, consistent as the other 3 wines I have tried - net, they are ALL great! Enjoy! We have currently moved into 1st place - but keep voting for the last few days to keep us there! https://www.10best.com/awards/travel/best-wine-club-2020/ - Bas vers le haut!
Chris on Matt Parish Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
Onto the 2nd Matt Parish wine I wanted to enjoy this weekend, and this is an older one of his Napa Cabs (in that I have let it rest a bit longer in the cellar). This is the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon (not the reserve - that one is still resting a bit longer). I believe I have enjoyed ALL of Matt's releases of his Napa Cab since the 2012 vintage (including some Magnums - although not all those have been opened yet - again, saving those for special occasions also). Anyway, enough of my fan-boy blather - you want to know how the wine tastes, right? Let's get on with it then! The color in the glass is a fairly deep bing cherry flesh, with a slight inky heart to it, although I can see my fingers through the glass somewhat. Sniffy sniff time – Luscious blackberry fruit, with hints of roasted coffee beans, a touch of cocoa, and some smoky cedar-wood greet the nose...it's already perking up my taste buds for what's to come. Tasty Taste time – the blackberry fruit carries over to the palate with some black plum, and touch of black cherry (lots of black fruit here - makes me think of Scotty P's All Blacks, in name only, as this is very different of course). Beyond that, dark chocolate notes, some black currant, nice spices (maybe a touch of cinnamon), and savory oak to finish this one out. Tannins are a middlin' as is the acidity. The texture is silky smooth, with a finish that shows some dusty notes. Very nice! Ok - I am really wishing I had more of this one in the cellar, but likely do not. There are so many good wines from Nakedwines.com, and of course, Matt has quite a bit of releases in that mix, so for just me (since I'm the only wine drinker in the house - for shame, I know!), it makes it hard to stock up on many of them (say reserve a half case). But wow - I'm sad I don't have another bottle of this in the cellar to see how it is in another few years. Yes, it's that good, Peeps! Looks like many of you agree at 96% as of this writing. Well, except for my Sweeties, of course, as this is not for you. But for all you Big Red Wine lovers out there - grab some of the next vintage! I think it's safe to say, you can't go wrong buying up some of Matt's Napa Cabs whenever they are available, as you won't be disappointed in the least. For me? I rate this one 5 hearts! (so will the 2017 Reserve Napa Cab be 6 then? What? 5 is the limit? - Ugh!).... Time to bottle this one up...remember you are in the #1 BEST PLACE at Nakedwines.com (according to USA Today and ME), and one of the 10 best wine clubs (so says Wine Enthusiast and ME) - for the year 2019…Let's do it again in 2020 - contest is now over, BUT we moved into 1st place - before they stopped showing us how we were doing to keep the outcome a surprise! Matt Parish Contra Costa Rose of Carignan & Mourvedre 2019
$24.99
Chris on Matt Parish Contra Costa Rose of Carignan & Mourvedre 2019
I have a number of Matt's wines I have been saving, so why not continue to open and review them? However, before I get to one of those (older Cab Sauv), I'll start with his 2019 Rose of Carignan and Mourvedre. Opening and enjoying a chilled Rose on a hot day like today, is refreshing, so let's see how Matt's latest Rose tastes for me! The color in the glass is a beautiful Peachy-Pink, a color my wife used in our wedding. Sniffy sniff time – On the nose, I'm picking up hints of raspberry fruit, and honeysuckle, with nice citrus notes as well. Tasty Taste time – Rolling this wine around the palate shows some strawberry fruit, with a bit of the raspberry still there also. Some slight hints of anise, moving into a bit more citrus on the finish. Medium acidity, but still a bit of zing to it! Very enjoyable! This was the 26th unique MP wine I have had, so on my way to 50 now. And this is also a new thing for me, as I don't think I have had a Carignan + Mourvedre Rose before (have enjoyed those varietals quite a bit in blends and solo), so this is something new to explore! I've consistently enjoyed Matt's Rose of Pinot Noir (4.5 hearts each - give it a try!), and I'm finding this one to be a delight as well! Sweeties, this one likely won't be up your alley IMHO, but feel free to try it out and expand your horizons. For me, this Rose gets 4.5 hearts! Time for another glass! Camille Benitah Terre de Feu Lake County Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
$22.99
Chris on Camille Benitah Terre de Feu Lake County Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
Hey there, peeps! I have not had too many of today's winemaker's wines, but we'll see if that will change after today's offering. I am opening Camille Benitah's 2017 Cab, and I love cabs, so let's see how this one tastes! The color in the glass is a deep bing/cherry to black/plum skin with some inkyness in it's heart. Sniffy Sniff Time - cherry and berry fruit (black) on the nose, with nice oak, and a hint of clove. Tasty Taste Time - on the palate I am picking up the cherry fruit, black currant, some tea, hints of leather, nutmeg, and oak. Acidity and tannins are middlin', and the texture is quite smooth. The finish lingers with some savory goodness. Oh boy - this is a good'un, peeps! I wonder if it's the volcanic soil that is adding the complexity here...very cool (or should I say hot)? Really wishing I would have let this one alone as this is going to be an easy 5 hearts is a year (I predict) as right now, it drinks very well. I give this 4.5 hearts, and will definitely be adding more to my next case. Time to bottle this one up...remember, you are in a GOOD place at Nakedwines.com...bas vers le haut!
Chris on Matt Parish Napa Rose of Pinot Noir 2018
I received my new case today with many great wines, but grabbed Matt's new Rose to try it right away - it was a bit chilled from the shipment, which was good, so waited a bit, and then opened it up - let's see how it tastes! The color in the glass is a pale salmon with pink tint. Sniffy Sniff Time - hints of strawberry and raspberry fruit on the nose, with fresh floral scents as well - Spring is coming, and it shows in this glass! Tasty Taste Time - Fresh and crisp on the palate with nice acid, and the berry fruit continuing to show. Some chalk and touch of steeliness as well towards the finish. This is a very nice Rose, and so easy to enjoy - definitely getting a 2nd glass tonight. This is the 16th unique wine of Matt's I have tasted, and all have gotten 4.5 or 5 hearts so far but one (it got a 4) - and I think he may have the most 5 hearts from me at SIX (38%)...so, where does this one stack up? 4.5 hearts. This one is a new Fave Rose for me, so will need to grab more before it's gone, and you should too! Although, my sweeties may not care for this as it's fairly dry, but if you enjoy a good, dry, crisp and flavorful rose, then this is yours! Time to bottle this one up...remember, you are in a GOOD place at Nakedwines.com...bas vers le haut!
