Nigel on Rod Easthope Reserve Hawke's Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2021

My wife and I awarded this beauty a rare 5 hearts. This varietal is our favorite white to begin with and we’ve tasted many brands from most of the geographic regions well known for producing excellent Sauvignon Blanc and by wine makers who specialize in this grape. Many of our favorites are from New Zealand with some others from cool climate areas of California, too. So, what did we like so much about Rod’s 2021 Hawke’s Bay vintage? The color wasn’t tremendously impactful - a pale yellow, almost to the point of being close to a light green tea - but it was very bright in the glass. The nose was huge, though, literally leaping from the glass with vibrant aromas of pineapple and papaya. The flavor was again very fruity, a blend of tropical feels, yet set within a framework of crisp citrus edges. The long, complex finish yielded the elusive grassy note this varietal is famous for when presented at its best. You could sip this all evening by itself, with light appetizers or with a variety of white meats, perhaps a light vegetarian Thai curry or a shrimp stir fry. I got a few more bottles at this amazing price point!

Nigel on Ondine Chattan Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2017 1.5L Magnum

Boy, this was a hard one. I really wanted to cellar this bottle for a couple of years but....since it was a generous free gift intended to celebrate the 7th anniversary of NakedWines.Com and it arrived in time to celebrate Independence Day 2019, I went ahead and did my onerous duty, lol! I did space it our over two days.... You'll see by my 5 heart rating that I sorta, kinda liked this! The Fernweh (Ondine's special name for it, indicating a type of Wanderlust) was brightly translucent and a dark plum purple in color. There was an earthy, almost mushroom overlay to the fruity aroma; very intriguing and inviting. The flavor profile, to me, was big and bold, predominantly that of dark cherry with some toasted orange peel notes. This is the sort of Pinot Noir that I like best - huge, complex and with a well rounded mouthfeel. We ate it with a locally grown (Willamette Valley) pork chop and our own, even more local, garden vegetables. Interestingly, I enjoyed it more on Day 1 than Day 2. Ondine did say in her recommendations that one shouldn't over aerate it, so this might not be surprising.

Nigel on Tomas Buendia Verdejo Chardonnay 2015

I did give this 5 hearts but sadly there is no more left to buy. My tasting notes were all over the place: dry but with high mouthfeel; citrusy like a sugared grapefruit; some pineapple whisps; almost an Orange Muscat feel to it. This is an excellent, lightly oaked wine perfect for patio sipping or with grilled fish.

This wine is a deep coral pink in color and has a powerful aroma of apricot with a bit of rose blossom. The flavor came like a crushed strawberry topping on vanilla ice cream but bone dry! It was slightly acidic to balance the intense fruitiness and I would sip this on a lovely summer's evening or drink with a white meat dinner served with a cream sauce or perhaps a Thai curry. We drank it with fajitas on May 5. At under $10 a bottle, no wonder it sold out quickly. I "favorited" it!

This wine is almost transparent in the glass, presenting a very fine, light straw color. Upon closing in to absorb the aroma, one is met with a very enthusiastic and vibrant nose leaping out of the glass! Floral and pear-like. It presented a kaleidoscope of flavors ranging from banana cream to peach and then lemon/lime sorbet. Words fail me, in that the wine was definitely dry but the mouthfeel was luscious and almost toffee-like. It surely is a testimony to Ondine's skill with Sauvignon Blanc, perhaps in managing the acidity profile so well, that she is able to construct so many layers of texture and flavor here. I'm not sure if I'd pair this with food, necessarily, in that it is an excellent wine to enjoy on a summer's evening around a pool , deck or patio with good friends and great conversations. Well, OK, maybe with bacon-wrapped scallops appetizers! My wife is pretty much a Sauvignon Blanc person and favors Marlborough, NZ brands; however, we both agree that this is one of the finest SB's we've each tasted. Get some of this outstanding, and very well priced, beauty before the summer runs its course!

Jacqueline has produced yet another stunning version of her Cabernet Franc Sonoma Valley. The 2013 is still maturing nicely and, although the 2015 is young, it is well worth opening a bottle now. There is a bold tannin presence balanced by sumptuous fruit and a nice acidity. I tasted black cherries, leather and a little beech wood. The flavor lingers on and on. There is so much more left in this wine to be revealed over the next 5-10 years. Get some!

It's unusual to find a wine of this complexity and tannin combination, especially at this price. It has a very dark color, strong legs in the glass and offers an earthy, blackberry scent. The taste is of dark cane fruit, bracketed by intense complexity, strong tannins and balanced acidity. It has that fine Bordeaux feel to it. Pair it with red meat or ripe cheese.

I bought a couple of bottles a month or so ago and made a mental note that for a CdR under $10 this wine was a very good example of a NakedWines.Com bargain. What particularly interested me was the distinct tannin presence that leads me to think this will unfold brilliantly over the next 5 years. It held up to roast lamb even with no aging and so I think this could well be a "house red" for many people who enjoy the fruity-but-dry full bodied reds.

For some entertainment, invite a knowledgeable friend around for an Italian meal, decant this wine and tell him or her that you are serving a Ripasso or even an Amarone. . I fully expect that your guest would estimate that you paid $50 or more for this wine. It has all the full color, aroma and chewy mouthfeel of the aforementioned wines at a fraction of the price. After a couple of glasses of this and into a rich Lasagna, I don't think many people would be able to tell the difference, blind tasting or not. I served it with Osso Buco for our Valentine's Day meal and it helped to make the experience sublime. Full of fruit, an off-dry impression (I don't know the Residual Sugar, but I bet it's low), a complex flavor profile and plenty of balance between tannins and acid to last a while, this is to be treasured.

Sad that Scott is leaving us but happy that Matt's capable hands and prodigious wine making skills will be watching the Hill and making the wine again. This is a huge wine - from the strong legs (thighs?) on the glass to it's dark plummy color to the aroma that leaps out of the glass even with no decanting. I tasted figs and caramel in this full bodied, fruit forward delight; the Merlot used in this must be top notch - the perfume-like quality was very noticeable. Balancing this, was the distinctive backbone of leathery Cabernet Sauvignon. Typical of a great Bordeaux this wine was greater than the sum of its parts, yet the two varietals were very much identifiable in the flavor profile. Soft tannins and balanced acidity yield a dark currant-like chewiness and a complex aftertaste that lingers. With a few more in the cellar put away for a few years, Nigel is a happy camper!

I'm not sure if the wine is really sold out after just a short time being released. I hope not! I know Sarah and Ana have been making Portuguese-style wines in the foothills for some time, but I missed out on other releases here at nakedwines.com. You snooze, you lose! I cannot express fully how much I enjoyed this wine with its myriad of flavors and layers of complexity. I think only a poet can do justice to a good port and this is an example. Very rich, some fig flavors mixed with lighter berry notes, amazing aroma, not overly sweet yet rounded and satisfying. In a blind taste I would have rated this highly as a ruby Port from the old country. Well done S&A, and thank you to nakedwines,com for backing this - we have asked for an American port-style for some time and you listened.
