Scott Peterson Brass Tacks California Pinot Noir 2019 FIVE STARS 5***** THE BASICS - Natural Cork closure, 14.2% ABV https://us.nakedwines.com/products/scott-peterson-brass-tacks-california-pinot-noir-2019 First impressions? Beautiful garnet in the glass BOUQUET - Bowlfuls of spicy dark fruit, Timothy Grass, Aronia Berries. This is a real (Brit!) Christmas Pudding of wine! NOSE - Mulberry, Blackberry, Soft Tobacco. VERY smooth! PALATE - Strawberries, Black Cherry, Bitter Orange Zest, Cranberries FINISH - The dry citrus zest lingers. Rich berry aromas persist from bouquet to finish PAIRINGS - Too numerous to mention, but I'll try! Pan-fried Medallions of Pork with a Berry Sauce, Baked Pork Chops with a Brown Sugar Glaze, Roast Heritage Turkey with Cranberry Sauce, Roast Duck with Plum Sauce, How about a plate of mild cheeses? We tried "The Walmart Selection" - LOL! Havarti, Medium Cheddar, Jack Cheddar, Brie.. all were excellent. It paired VERY well with Pepper Jack, which brought to mind Indian, Korean or Mexican cuisine. Not many red wines pair well with spicy food, and this is one of them. Certain desserts would work well. One that sprung to mind was Vanilla (baked) Cheesecake with Berries and a Berry Coulis. Conclusion - 100% Superb and 100% Ready to Drink. Very few wines are THIS good without laying down for a few years, and this is one of them, and it is also a perfect match for so many foods, as well as for drinking on its own. I ordered 12 bottles, but have to wait until August 1st before my order goes through. PLEASE don't clear the shelves before then! BTW the price-point? If I was drinking this in a restaurant, I would happily pay $42-46 for a bottle. This is one heck of a bargain at the offered price of $14.99/$15.99

Franck Massard Mas Sardana Cava NV76 5 ***** Yes, FIVE Stars, although 6 would be much more appropriate! LINK - https://us.nakedwines.com/products/franck-massard-mas-sardana-cava-2019 THE BASICS - ABV 11.5% Closure - Cork VARIETALS - 50% Xarel·lo 25% Macaveo 25% Parellada BONUS - Franck is an ORGANIC grower! OK, I really am no expert on Cavas, but, as a Brit, it was always my sparkler of choice. It matched the quality of many of the better French Champagnes whilset retaining an affordable price point. On to the varietals. Xarel-lo is a white grape variety of Spanish origin specially grown in Catalonia. With Macaveo and Parellada, it is one of the three traditional varieties used to make the sparkling wine cava. Xarel·lo wine can be strongly flavored and is more aromatic than the other two cava grape varieties. BOUQUET - Bubbly! Floral, lightly perfumed with Pineapple Guava Blossoms. NOSE - Ripe Pears, Bramley Apples, Golden Kiwifruit, a little Clove. PALATE - Full blown Baked Bramley Apples, stuffed with butter, raisins and Cloves! Served with English Custard! No, I was joking about the custard - LOL! FINISH - THis is a moderately aromatic dry wine, right through to the finish - which delivers a touch of Meyer Lemons and toffee apple. PAIRINGS - This is SO fantastic on its own, that I would not consider pairing it with anything except a selection of mild French cheeses. Think Camembert or Brie and take it from there. Think also Lemon Cheesecake or souffle. This is a beautifully structured Cava that Franck is surely very proud of . At this price point, it is also wonderful value for money. Consider laying in a case (or 2, if your State permits it!) for summer drinking, as well as a few bottles for special occasions! Learn a little about the varietals and you will truly impress your guests!

Hubby claims he is getting Pistachio on the finish, and he really is the red wine buff! PAIRINGS - Spicy Mexican Barbequed Tuna Steaks, Prime Rib, Venison, Elk. Von Strasser Vineyard 2131 Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 5 STARS https://us.nakedwines.com/products/von-strasser-vineyard-2131-diamond-mountain-cabernet-sauvignon-2015 THE BASICS - Cork closure, ABV 14.2% BOUQUET - Buttered raisin bread toast, soft oak with TONS of dark jammy fruit with a hint of Cinnamon NOSE - Black cherries, Pistachios and Melon PALATE - Soft Oak with a panoply of dark fruit, Black Pepper FINISH - Soft tannins LATE FINISH - Black raspberry, Conclusions? Absolutely Specacular! This is a BIG, chewy, delicious Cab and shows what can happen when you lay down a top quality Cabernet for 5 years. Yes, it IS going to be pricey, but cellaring for 5 years, maintaining optimal conditions, does not come cheap! For those of you who have deeper pockets, get a couple of cases because this is the best Cab either of us has ever drunk, BUT I suggest ALL of you grab a special bottle for Christmas, and get to celebrate the Saviour's birth with a bottle of total deliciousness that, quite seriously, would pair with just about anything!
Caroline S on Sharon Weeks Cattoo Central Coast Rose 2019
Sharon Weeks Cattoo Central Coast Rose 2019 https://us.nakedwines.com/products/sharon-weeks-cattoo-central-coast-rose-2019 THE BASICS - Screw Top, ABV 12.8% I have a truly glorious peachy-pink wine in my glass right now, and am SO glad I bought more than one bottle! BOUQUET - Sherry Trifle with Raspberries! Vanilla, Strawberries, Rhubarb and a little Cinnamon NOSE - Juicy Summer fruit - Strawberry, Redcurrant, Pomegranate, Snapdragon Apples PALATE - Whipped double cream and Vanilla with Red Raspberries. Lovely dry wine FINISH - Tart Apples with a little refreshing zing of Citrus This is SUCH a wonderful wine, I am GUTTED that it is not available at this time, but I HAVE added it to my wish-list. Sharon, you did an awesome job and this is an absolutely wonderful Rose!
Caroline S on Matt Parish Louie's Block Old Vine Zinfandel 2018
Matt Parish Louie's Block Old Vine Zinfandel 2018 https://us.nakedwines.com/products/matt-parish-louies-block-old-vine-zinfandel-2018 THE BASICS - ABV 16.1% (No, that wasn't a mis-type.. WOWZA!) and a Cork Closure I must say that my husband was SO impressed after 5 minutes of tasting that he sent me upstairs to order a case of 12, but we were out of luck, so tentatively await a restock! We aerated this wine and watched the magnificent dark blood-red liquid gurgle its way into the glass with light ruby tints. Despite its depth of colour, this wine has tremendous clarity. No chewing down on the lees here! BOUQUET - POWERFUL! Approach this rocket fuel with caution; you could get quite high on the fumes.. and, STRICTLY, no naked flames - LOL! Swirl in a large glass for best effect; Medium Oak, Black Cherry and Cocoa. NOSE - Not as big as the bouquet. The Oak is diminished but the Cherry remains. I am also getting Alfalfa and Mexican Oregano. PALATE- For a barrel-aged Old Vine Zinfandel, this is remarkably mild. It is not a complex wine. Blood Orange rind jumps out at this point. FINISH - The Oak rolls right through to the finish with a subtle Smoke. I am getting Elderberry on the late finish. This is a Big Bold Zinfandel and my husband, being a fourth generation Californian, knows plenty about great wines! He considers Matt's offering to be very distinct from the Amador County Zinfandels; that this wine has a softness about it. I would qualify his comments withy "Big MuUscles, Gentle Touch" This would pair well with Meat and Cheese-based Pasta dishes. We would certainly thaw out some of our "home-grown" Muscovy Duck Breasts to go with this, or Venison for that matter, marinated in Black Pepper, Soy Sauce and red wine (the cheap stuff!) sliced thinly and flash-fried in olive oil, served with a cherry-raspberry coulis. This wine is superb now, but I can only imagine what it would be like after 5-10 years cellaring. At the Angel's price of $16.99, this is a steal.. grab it while you can!
Caroline S on Sharon Weeks Cattoo California Red 2016
Well, Sharon has surely excelled herself with this one. What an amazing talent she has with those grapes! We examined the bottle's label for any indication of the varietals after removing the screw-top.. and nothing!, so when I checked here on the page, I was very taken by the range of grapes used in this wine, consisting of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo, Carignane, Cab Sauv, Shiraz, Primitivo, Zinfandel, Petit Verdot and Pinot Noir. Sharon must have had SO much fun making this, and, although it is still pretty young, it is already shaping up to be a great wine for drinking now, or for laying down for a few years. It is certainly robust enough to take that! OK, so on to the tasting notes. Bouquet - Black Cherries, Blackberry, cloves and white oak. Nose - Black raspberries, soft oak, black liquorice, topped off with cloves and gentle oak. If I could say that this has a long nose, I'd say it. It's a nose that just keeps on giving! Palate - SMmmmoooooothhh it most definitely is but after the fruit comes the young wine acidity. Even now, this wine is pretty well balanced and the oak well-rounded. It should please the BIG red fan but also appeal to people like myself who look for jammy fruit in their wines. Finish - long and thoughtful. Now it is time to close your eyes and start all over again. This is a truly superb wine from Sharon, and shows tremendous promise for laying down, which should further soften and merge some of those younger elements. For the money, this is amazing value. I am thinking that after two to three years cellar ageing, this will be spectacular, and, trust me, I am NEVER wrong when I say this! Great job, and my advice? If you have never laid a case of wine away for a couple of years, this is the one that should tempt you!
Caroline S on Evangelos Bagias Lodi Chardonnay 2016
Evangelos Bagias Lodi Chardonnay 2016 13.5% Alcohol by Volume (a moderate reading on the Pissykakiometer) Screw Cap I am always excited when I come across a new winemaker so when I saw this Bagias Lodi Chardonnay in my box, I retrieved it for that evening's tasting. I hollered out to hubby "I have a Baggy Ass".. he retorts "No you don't sweetie.." Of course, I deliberately mispronounced as I knew I would get a response! So without further ado, let's jump in there. Bouquet - mmm... succulent aromas of Pineapple, over-ripe Pear, Yellow Plums or Greengages and Jasmine Tea. This is already shaping up to be an exceptional wine. On to the nose and I am getting that pineapple with toffee apple, lychees and toast. This wine really gets those taste buds jumping! On to the palate, and I am getting my favourite summer fruit juice, which is Pink Grapefruit. I love this as a long, refreshing drink with home-made Peach Liqueur and Gin! Star fruit also springs to mind. You can also get a distinctive herbiness which I identify as Lemon Thyme. Now, on to the finish, and I get an initial burst of sweet/tart that lingers around into a very long, pleasant medium dry finish. This wine is just perfectly balanced.. hence some will say "Not for me.. too dry", and others will say "Not for me.. too sweet.. when it is neither. The oak is very subtle and delicious. This is NOT an in-your face, big butterscotch-and-vanilla oaky chardonnay, and part of that relates to where this wine is grown. This is a wine made for a warm summer afternoon on the porch,in a rocking chair, listening to the Swish-Swish-Swish of a habd-pushed lawnmower.. with someone else doing the pushing...
Caroline S on Rick Boyer Santa Barbara Pinot Noir 2016
After a few so-so red wines recently, I decided to give Rick's Pinot a run, and, boy, am I hyped for this wine! ABV 14.1% Cork closure This wine pours as smooth as liquid garnets. I confess that it smelt SO wonderful, I didn't even bother to let it breathe, with my nose drinking in those delicious red berry aromas. The bouquet delivers buttery smooth dark fruit. Damsons, Mulberry, Blackberry and Black Raspberry spring to mind (via the nose!). The nose erupts with powerful mulberry aromas, backed by light oak and tobacco.. On the palate I am getting liquorice and what I can only describe as "juicy" oak. This is certainly one delicious, fruit-forward wine. There is an unexpected but very pleasant sweetness of red raspberries on the tongue at first, which dissipates to an amazing complex of stone fruits and red berries with black pepper, and I am excited to try it again tomorrow evening after it has opened up. The finish is very dry, almost astringent, and a marked contrast to that initial sweetness. On the late finish, there is just a hint of that initial sweetness. In my opinion, this Pinot Noir is worth every last penny, and should be a wine that will lay down very nicely, I would say for up to a decade, because things will only get better from here!
Caroline S on Rick Boyer Santa Lucia Highlands Riesling 2015
Three words for starters - BEST RIESLING EVER! Plus the explanation mark of course :) OK.. so I'm making a batch of new jams for Shady Grove and the English Baker range of preserves, and have just put my latest creation into the jars and sealed them.. first off, we have Yellow Plum & Peach Jam with Crabapples (pressed by my own good self) with a Twist of Lime.. and also Peach & Crabapple Jam With Jalapeno & Lime. Both are totally scrummy! A hot and sweaty hubby has been mucking out the duck pen and calls me up for libations on the front porch before the evening (poultry) tasks. He has thoughtfully chilled this Riesling for me.. OK, thinks Caroline.. I am NOT a fan of Reisling, but I know what a decent Riesling SHOULD taste like and will give this my best shot. We settle down .. he is road-testing one of the reds.. and I peer at the bottle.. 12.5% alcohol.. pretty good for a Riesling, and I love the Boyer label too.. classy, not over-stated. Now, be aware that, as a Brit, every Riesling I have sampled has been European.. I was raised in the 1970's on cheap, unidimensional Liebfraumilch and Riesling.. I believe it was around 89 pence a bottle.. so my view of Riesling as my palate developed towards this varietal became very jaded. Roll in 2016, and after the first sniff, snort, gurgle, hold and swallow, I am blown away! So.,. what have those preserves got to do with this? Total coincidence but this wine is pretty much a medium dry version of my yummy jams! On the bouquet? Lime, Elderflower, Jasmine and a little Ginger. On to the nose.. Peaches, Lime zest and Honey.. see what I mean? The lime is just wonderful and totally unexpected. The floral notes give this wine a very exotic character. Next, on tio the palate where I get a distinctly KEY lime flavour, with that honey, orange blossoms and a hint, once more, of ginger. Finally, on to the finish, and man, I am having a blast here! Early finish delivers honeysuckle and lime - moving on to a long floral late finish. This is definitely a wine that has a medium dry character.. so on to food pairings and I am thinking Spicy Yellow Thai Curry.. or any Thai food for that matter. Think also of pairing it with other delights such as Duck a l'Orange or Orange Glazed Chicken. Hubby agrees with me but also suggests serving it chilled with a warm Creme Brulee.. mm.. maybe even a Key Lime Creme Brulee.. and maybe a dollop of Caroline's Yellow Plum & Peach Jam with Crabapples at the bottom of the Ramekin... I truly am loving Rick's Riesling and for anyone who enjoys a medium dry white to drink chilled, on its own, or with the pairings outlined, you are in for a major treat. I WAS ready to buy a case.. just as I was with Jacqueline's Cabernet Franc, but this wine is sold out.. bugger.. but as soon as it restocks, this WILL be my wine of choice for the Front Porch at Shady Grove Farm! Caroline S on Small and Small Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015
UPDATE - I just opened another bottle.. and this wine is even more amazing than first time around. CLASSIC! The crushed Blackcurrant leaves/cat pee combo is simply my favourite, and identifies this a heavenly, crème de la crème #1 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc! Original Review - When I lived in England I grew bush fruit.. LOTS of it. Blackcurrants, Redcurrants, Whitecurrants..oh, and a whole bunch of Gooseberries. EVERYONE grew them.. mums made pies and dads made wine from this aromatic, succulent fruit. Gooseberry wine was probably the first wine I ever tasted as a youngster. Green ones, Yellow ones, Pink ones and Red ones. The gooseberry is still my favourite fruit. In my forties, to my delight, back in England, I discovered New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and for me it was that incredible Gooseberry aroma that got me hooked. Then I moved to West Virginia and to my horror discovered that growing gooseberries and currants was verboten.. oh the horror of it, so I went out looking for a good Marlborough SB. Finally, after joining Naked Wines, I found it.. oh, way back. It was the Small and Small Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2012, and every year it reappears. This year it is better than ever! So on to the wine, and as others have noted, this must be one of the best Marlborough's around. Gooseberries and more Gooseberries :) The bouquet is gooseberries.. end of as far as I am concerned and I could sit here all night sniffing my fave fruit! On the palate the gooseberry flavor is diminished as the flavor of bright ripe Ruby Grapefruit emerges with echoes of lime and lemon.. interestingly, I juiced a pile of Ruby Grapefruit and Meyer Lemons this afternoon.. it's as though those aromas were somehow captured with this wine. Throughout the tasting and into the finish, we both detected Thyme.. perhaps Lemon Thyme? Overall, I rate this wine VERY highly and will definitely be buying it again.
Caroline S on Jim Olsen BX California 2014
The MOST disappointing thing about this wine is that we couldn't buy TWO cases.. one sip and my Californian hubby and red wine connoisseur, said "YES! - order TWO cases.. this is SUPERB!" BUT, I had ordered two cases under my name, and hubby one case under HIS name this month, so, alas, I placed an order for one.. and set the diary for November the 1st! So.. what makes this wine so exceptional? It is absolutely redolent of Fall evenings, of Hallowe'en candles, of pumpkin spice and earthy, damp woodlands spotted with forest fruits. Think log fires in the wood stove and a warm fleece cover over you and hubby, sacked out on the settee with a bunch of sleepy kittties.. The bouquet is soft and gentle with simmering cinnamon, nutmeg and clove-laced dark berry fruits. with caramelised fruit and spice on the nose... as smooth as one of my creamy home-made duck eggnogs. On the palate, this wine is lightly oaked with soft tannins. The caramel on the nose now comes through as toffee on the palate. with overtones of red raspberry and perhaps a hint of strawberry. The finish is long and lingering, with fine butterscotch and malt leaving the fruit behind. 'fess up Jim Olsen.. you've been adding Pumpkin Pie Spice to your wine in anticipation of the holidays, haven't you! Anyway, to sum this up, this is an absolutely cracking wine with excellent structure. The complexity could develop even more after a year in the wine cellar and I am very excited for Thanksgiving 2016, and at this price, there is nothing that can touch it from the Naked Wines stable.. grab it while you can.. just leave us a case for November 1st please...
